The Provincial Championship Final – Royal Randwick

Canberra horses were included in the Provincial Championships for the first time in 2017 and the nation’s capital provided first and third. In a repeat of her heat win at Goulburn in the Kembla Qualifier, Maryore stormed down in the outside from near last to win the $400,000 Final running away for trainer Philip Courtney and jockey Tim Clark. Better Not Blue left his run a bit late but arrived in time to finish second, just ahead of Ziganui who also qualified through the Kembla heat. Favourite Pomelo tried to lead all the way but was found wanting from the 200m and finished fourth.

Wyong - 2018 Provincial Championships Qualifier

Kris Lees was always going to have a strong hand in the Provincial Championships and one of his leading hopes Just Dreaming was sent out favourite and showed her class with a dominant performance to win the opening heat of 2018. The mare, ridden by Aaron Bullock, raced wide throughout and looked to have conceded too much ground around the turn but once she balanced up she powered over the top of the Kim Waugh-trained Manhattan Mist to score. It was a game effort from the runner-up while Brad Widdup’s consistent mare Witches charged home late to snatch third and also qualify for the Final.

Uptown Lad did it the hard way but the Kim Waugh trained gelding proved he can be a force in the Final with a last to first victory. The four-year-old had to be re-shod prior to the running of the race then missed the start, settling last. Apprentice Jean Van Overmeire sent him around the field coming to the turn and he mowed down those in front to arrive just in time to down the David Atkins-trained Plaisir, who made his run at the same time, in a close finish.
