2020 Hawkesbury - Polytrack Provincial Championships Qualifier

Moana Jewel is proof that a week can be a long time in racing. Seven days after beating one home in the Newcastle Qualifier, where she had little luck, the Tracey Bartley-trained mare turned things around at Hawkesbury scoring a strong win. She had to overcome her share of trouble once again but when Jeff Penza switched Moana Jewel back to the inside she darted through and held off a wall of chasers. Less than 1.5 lengths separated the next seven horses home and it was the Kris Lees-trained Great Danger and Munich, trained locally by Jason Attard and Lucy Keegan-Attard who also booked their places at Randwick.

2020 Newcastle - Polytrack Provincial Championships Qualifier

The Damien Lane-trained Oakfield Missile improved on his second placing in last year’s Newcastle Qualifier as he arrived in time in a blanket finish to the 2020 edition. Oakfield Missile had to overcome plenty of traffic in the early stages before Darryl McLellan could wind him up and he got there in the last stride to down the Kris Lees-trained favourite Stella Sea Sun who had just grabbed Kristen Buchanan’s Designated. The latter looked the winner as he hit the lead with 150m to run after setting out to chase a runaway leader but the effort just told on Designated in the closing stages.

2020 Gosford Polytrack Provincial Championships Qualifier

*Run at Newcastle* For the second year running the Gosford Qualifier had to be moved to a midweek Newcastle slot due to inclement weather and it was a local Newcastle victory as talented mare Asharani, trained by Kris Lees, proved far too good. Brenton Avdulla settled her in the back half of the field and she came with a sweeping run down the outside for a popular win with punters. Angela Davies’ consistent gelding Through The Cracks ensured a Gosford trained horse made the final through its Qualifier as he came from two lengths behind the winner to go under less than half a length with the Paul Perry-trained General Soho darting along the fence to snatch third.

2020 Kembla Grange Polytrack Provincial Championships Qualifier

Electric Girl was sent out favourite despite jumping from the outside alley and she didn’t let supporters down on her home track. Travis Wolfgram quickly put paid to the wide barrier by landing the filly in fourth place and one off the fence, from there the promising filly was always going to be hard to stop. Prepared by leading local trainer Gwenda Markwell, who also won the 2018 Qualifier, Electric Girl was able to hold off the fast finish of Tracey Bartley’s McCormack, who had her back in the run, while Kris Lees qualified another horse with his lightly raced filly Enchanted Heart running a close third after coming through a string of wins on country tracks.

Andrew Gibbons brought the three-year-old to the outside on the home turn and he wound up strongly, hitting the lead at the 200m and comfortably holding off Kim Waugh’s Oxford Tycoon who followed him home into second. Outsider Oakfield Captain stayed on for third, after momentarily hitting the front early in the straight, and gave Damien Lane a second runner in the Final.

2020 The Polytrack Provincial Championship Final – Royal Randwick

Big finishing gelding Through The Cracks handed Gosford trainer Angela Davies her biggest win as he swept home from near the rear under James McDonald to take out the Polytrack Provincial Championships Final. Despite conceding the leaders some 10 lengths on the home turn, Through The Cracks relished a solid tempo and hit the lead 100m out before drawing clear. The placegetters Moana Jewel, trained by Tracey Bartley, and Oxford Tycoon for Kim Waugh made their runs at the same time from back in the field but couldn’t match the winner’s turn of foot. In a bob of the heads finish for second Moana Jewel gained the runner-up spot.
