About
David Hayes was born into racing royalty as the son of the great Colin Hayes of Lindsay Park fame. David took over the training operation in 1990-91 and at 28 set a world record of six Group winners in a day at Flemington on Derby Day that year.
He dominated the Melbourne and Adelaide trainers’ titles and in 1996 moved to Hong Kong and in nine seasons there won two trainers’ premierships before returning to Lindsay Park.
David has trained more than 2800 winners, including 78 Group One, and was the youngest trainer inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.
In 2014, David and his nephew Tom Dabernig - son of sister Jan, established a training partnership. Dabernig had been part of the Lindsay Park team since 1993, helping oversee the initial stages of Lindsay Park’s move from Angaston to Euroa where he did pre-training and breaking-in. In 2009 Dabernig moved to Flemington to become Hayes’ assistant trainer.
The partnership quickly found success with Criterion's outstanding win in the 2015 $4,000,000 Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes and will look for a repeat at this years carnival.
