"Rare" Talent Won't Be Deprived

By Brad Gray

“He has got something about him that is certainly pretty rare.”

It’s a ringing endorsement from James Cummings who casts his eye over hundreds of horses every morning. Especially when you consider the horse has only won a midweek maiden.

Deprive is a horse to follow over the coming months given Godolphin’s high hopes for the exciting three-year-old. The Denman gelding launches his autumn bid on Friday night at Canterbury in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1200m).

“It was only a slowly run maiden that he won at Warwick Farm but he produced a really fast couple of furlongs to win it and looks to have a lot of upside,” beamed Cummings.

“He has got a good grounding before this first up run so I would expect nothing less than a really good effort.”

It’s a Benchmark 75 on paper but casting an eye down the field and seeing the likes of Pendeloque, Legadema, Nationality, Pandemonium, Warranty, Problem Solver and Excellent Design engaged, it could be a stakes race in disguise.

“It has some depth to it but off the back of his recent trials where he has motored home and looked good, I’d say he is certainly capable of another fresh victory,” Cummings said.

“We have nominated him for the Arrowfield but you have to. There are a bunch of horses nominated there that are probably maidens.

“We’ll pick off the low hanging fruit with Deprived for now but if he gets there I wouldn’t get in his way of running in that race.”

The $600,000 G2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) is run on Day 2 of The Championships, on April 14 with TAB's futures market rating him a $101 chance.
