Maryore Sweeps Into Provincial Final

By Brad Gray

Mayore booked her spot in the Provincial Championships Final with a last to first victory in the Goulburn qualifier, which was switched from Kembla Grange due to rain. Joining her at Randwick will the placegetters Ziganui and Virgilio.

“I expected her to run in the first three and a win wasn’t out of the realms,” said Canberra-based trainer Philip Courtney.

“Her work has been great and her first-up start was pretty good on heavy which tuned her up. We set her up for this series and it’s good to have plans come off.

“I’ll have to take her back and freshen her up because her preferred distance is a mile but she does handle the heavy tracks so if there is a bit of rain around she’ll be right in it (the final).”

Tim Clark, who displayed brilliant hands to regather his whip at the top of the straight, tagged the back of race favourite Louie Sea Kay which proved the winning move.

“I thought she came here a little underestimated,” said Clark.

“She was going to be really strong at the end of 1400m which was a query with a lot of the other horses but it’s great for Phil and his team to win a heat and get a runner into the final. She is not without a chance.

“She can go on any surface and she’s a really honest, consistent mare. I’ve won one of the heats every year since the Championships started so I’m glad to get another one this year.

Clark is confident of staying on the mare for the final on Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick (April 8).
