About
Raised in Streaky Bay, South Australia, Kerrin McEvoy turned small town beginnings into a major international career. At the age of 20 in 2000 aboard Brew, McEvoy became the second youngest jockey to win the Melbourne Cup; four years older than Ray Neville on Rimfire in 1948.
A third placing on Beekeeper, owned by Sheikh Mohammad’s global racing powerhouse Godolphin, in 2002, catapulted McEvoy to the international stage with Godolphin contracting him as the stable’s number two European rider to Frankie Dettori.
After riding 120 winners for Godolphin in Europe – six at Group One level – McEvoy returned to Australia and based himself in Sydney to ride for Darley, Sheikh Mohammad’s Australian racing operation, where he amassed more than 20 Group One successes.
McEvoy announced the end to his association with Godolphin in September 2014, deciding to become a freelance rider. He wasted no time in securing his next Group One, when steering star mare Lucia Valentina to victory in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.
