About
Craig Newitt grew up in Tasmania in a family immersed in racing. His Mum was a jockey, his Dad was a jumps jockey and trainer, and his sister strapped horses growing up. Newitt started out riding his Dad's horses and then progressed to riding for trainer Leon Wells out of Spreyton. During the 2001/2002 racing season he was approached by Lee Freedman to complete his apprenticeship under him in Melbourne.
Pompeii Ruler was the best horse he has ridden although due to injury he could never show his full potential. Newitt also had great success with the Lee Freedman-trained Miss Andretti who sprinted her way to Royal Ascot and launched Newitt onto the world stage.
Riding now is a balance between family and racing success with Newitt’s wife Karli, and three boys Noah, Chase and Casey.
