Hawkesbury Filly Spright To Tackle Light Fingers First-up

Hawkesbury's star filly Spright will trial again before embarking on a new campaign at Royal Randwick next month. Spright, unbeaten in three starts last spring culminating with a brilliant Melbourne Cup carnival victory, was given an easy time when fourth in a 1000m Open trial on her home track yesterday morning.

Trainer Garry Frazer, who has done a splendid job with the daughter of Hinchinbrook, reported the filly has pulled up well from the hit out.

Frazer’s son Jordan, who weighs “around 70kg”, was aboard Spright, who missed the start and was never put under any pressure but still finished off strongly.

"She took a backward step when the gates opened and as a result gave the others a decent start,” Frazer explained. “Jordan rides her in her work, and obviously knows her well. I didn’t want him to give her a hard trial; I was happy with what she did.”

Frazer intends to give Spright a second barrier trial – at Randwick on January 27 – before she resumes there against her own sex in the $200,000 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) on February 11. The Group 2 feature for three-year-old fillies is run at set weights (56kg).

Spright has won three of her eight starts to date, earning $351,800. She finished sixth on debut to Honesty Prevails in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill 12 months ago and since has not been out of a place in seven outings.

She really came to prominence in the spring, scoring impressively first-up at Rosehill Gardens on September 28 to shed her maiden status before overpowering the “boys” to win the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 15.

Spright then confirmed her status as one of the country’s best three-year-old sprinting fillies by coming from 15th at the 800m to land the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on November 3.
