Adam Pengilly Wins Big For beyondblue In TAB Champion Tipster

The Sydney Morning Herald’s Adam Pengilly is TAB Champion Tipster for 2016.

Pengilly took the lead on Day 1 of The Championships, courtesy of Tavago’s win at big odds ($47) in the BMW Australian Derby, and then held off 25 challengers with two minor placegetters on a big Day 2 of The Championships – Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day at Royal Randwick.

Pengilly [pictured below] finished with a balance of $656 after the TAB placed $10 each-way bets (on the NSW TAB) across 12 races during two unforgettable days of The Championships, the grand finals of horse racing in Australia.

South China Morning Post’s Andrew Hawkins was runner-up on $610 after failing to add to his Day 1 tally, also built courtesy of Kiwi, Tavago in the Derby.

Clinton Payne (Racenet) had a strong Day 2 to finish third with $399, while Sky’s Andrew Bensley came from near last with the final four winners in the tipping challenge (Sofia Rose $7.70), Gallante ($10.50), Azkadellia ($2.70) and Lucia Valentina ($7.60) to be fourth on $386.

Pengilly, one of the nation’s up and coming star racing scribes, won $5000 for his charity beyondblue.

“I am absolutely thrilled for beyondblue, it’s something I am passionate about,” Pengilly said. “I think I’ve been lucky to win, with Tavago obviously looking after me at big odds in a race I was hoping he might just run a place in.

“In the end I haven’t picked the most winners, but got the right result and full credit to all those who took part and created a lot of interest and fun.

“It was a fantastic concept and thanks to the TAB and Racing NSW for inviting me and putting up the money, which is a significant donation to beyondblue.”
