A talented colt but often the bridesmaid, Sidestep made his presence known as a two year old running in most of the top races. Starting his career with a third in the Merson Cooper Stakes (L) in his early two year old season, Sidestep returned in the autumn to show considerable talent. Coming second behind fellow Championships Winner Criterion in the Black Opal (L), the young colt backed up after losing his rider in the Todman Stakes (G2) to win the Pago Pago Stakes (G2). Taking on the significant challenge of his third race in as many weeks, Sidestep proved the best colt but not good enough for filly Overreach when second in the Golden Slipper (G1). As a three year old Sidestep peaked for Autumn’s riches when he took back to back races in the Darby Munro Stakes (L) and then The Championships Royal Sovereign Stakes (G2).
