Few horses can lay claim to brilliance at the two year old sprints while also excelling at the middle distances in their three year old year. Criterion proved that he was exceptional when he did just that, taking out the Australian Derby at The Championships. As a two year old, Criterion showed precocious tenacity when winning Canberra’s Black Opal (L). This was followed by a win in the Todman Stakes (G2), beating Blue Diamond runner up Fast ‘n’Rocking. After a hampered run in the Golden Slipper he finished a respectable 6th. As a spring three year old, Criterion showed talent without winning over a distance when second in both the Stan Fox Stakes (G2) and Spring Champion Stakes (G1). However he showed his dominance over these distances as an autumn three year old, eventually taking out both the Rosehill Guineas (G1) and the Australian Derby (G1).
